Chapter 6

Last Lunch

As they walked the trail back to the cabin, thick, gray clouds obliterated the sun, taking control of the afternoon weather.

“It’s not supposed to rain.” Alison frowned.

As if on cue, lightning flashed across the sky and low rumbles thundered through the valley. A second later the rain came as if someone had sliced open the rain-pregnant clouds. By the time they stood in the cabin, they were soaked.

Rich turned to Max. “We better set up the canopy over the grill so we can get lunch going.”

Kara dug into one of their duffel bags and pulled out beach towels. “We were going to get lunch started, but then you were gone too long.” She handed them to Rich and Max. “We brought them in case we went swimming.”

Rich took the towel and dried his face. “Thanks.” He dried his arms and legs the best he could. As much as he wanted to stay indoors and dry off, they had to get the canopy set up to move the grill. They’d bring out chairs to avoid sitting on the wet picnic bench. “I’m going to change out of these soaked clothes.”

“Good idea,” Max said.

“Rich?” Kara touched his arm. “While you were out in the woods, we heard Vinnie and Mona Lisa talking outside.” Kara looked at Alison as if for support. “They were talking quietly, but we had the windows open.”

“They were talking about money they had,” Alison said. “And how long they’d hide out here until they could get down to Mexico.”

“Vinnie and Mona Lisa aren’t their real names,” Kara said. “It’s Danny and Jennifer, and they were arguing about where they should go. Jennifer said Mexico would be better, but he wants to go to Europe.”

Rich and Max exchanged glances. This wasn’t turning out to be the camping trip Rich had anticipated. Cryptids and criminals. Charming.

Kara rubbed the towel through her hair. “For all of Jennifer playing demure with us, she was quite stern with Danny.”

Alison turned to Max. “What should we do?”

“Why are you asking me?” Max looked at Rich and Kara. “We do nothing. That’s what we do.”

“We could be in danger,” Kara said.

“It’s none of our business,” Max stated. “They have a right to be here, regardless of whether they have duffel bags full of money or not.”

“We weren’t eavesdropping,” Alison said.

“It was kind of hard not to hear them,” Kara said. “It sounded like they had a lot of money with them.”

“I think it was stolen,” Alison toweled her hair.

“Now you’re making shit up,” Max said directly at Alison. “You don’t know that. All you know is that they have money and their names are Danny and Jennifer. So what?” He looked at Rich. “Am I right?”

Rich didn’t want to get involved with their neighbors. He didn’t want to know where the money came from or where they were heading. Let them do whatever they wanted. “It’s safer if we leave them alone. If we start asking questions, and they get suspicious—”

Max chuckled. “What are they gonna do? Kill us?” He glanced from Rich to Kara.
